While the news column has been idle, Flor de Caña (FDC) Softball has been anything but. Here is a quick a recap of recent events:
Santa Fe Springs I: FDC (5W – 1L)

FDC welcomes Alexandra Liana Carrillo: FDC (+1)
June 13, 2008
At 5:48 PM (06/13/08), Alexandra Liana Carrillo was welcomed into this world by proud parents David Carrillo (FDC Centerfielder) and Edie Laguna. She weighed 6 lbs 15 oz.

FDC Ace Cecilio Smalling demands the opportunity to make the child a pitching protégé and has contacted UCLA to negotiate an early acceptance and scholarship.*
*Note: This does not reflect the views of the parents. Everybody knows she is going to be a CF at her father’s Alma Mater (Williams College).
Santa Fe Springs II: FDC (2-3)
June 21-22, 2008
In the words of Yogi Berra, “If you always do what you always did, you’ll always get what you always got.” FDC is the reigning (2 time) Southern California Alliance “A” division champions. The title is a badge of honor, but has not translated into success at the national stage. It is apparent the team needs to better prepare for the major challenge.
FDC management elected to move up to the A-Major division for the remainder of the 2008 season. Playing in the upper division will almost certainly affect the team’s winning percentage, but the higher caliber of pitching and all-around play will make for a more powerful squad come the 2008 World Series.
If FDC wanted tougher competition, they sure got it in their first game of the weekend against Rude-Pac, the 2007 World Series NAFA A-Major Champions. Be careful what you ask for, you just might get it. FDC proved up to the task earning a hard fought 5-1 victory over one of the game’s best Rude-Pac Ace Spud Barker. On side note, Darrin McCall pitched perhaps the best game of his young pitching career to get the win. It was scripted nicely considering McCall was a major contributor of Rude-Pac’s 2007 Championship team and it was the first time McCall has faced his former teammates.
Outstanding FDC performers over the weekend included:
Pitching:
#17 – Cecilio Smalling Sr.: 1W, 6.00 IP, 0.00 ERA, 1 K
#2 – Darrin McCall: 1W, 13.00 IP,1.08 ERA, 6 K
Hitting:
#2 – Darrin McCall: .714 Avg, 1 2b, 3 r, 2 rbi, 1 sb
#1 – Lou Enriquez: .556 Avg, 1 r, 1sb
#13 – Carlos Gonzalez: .455 Avg, 2 r, 1 rbi
#19 – David Carrillo: .429 Avg, 3 2b, 1 hr, 4 r, 8 rbi, 1 sb
FDC finished 3rd at Santa Fe Springs II in the NAFA A-Major division. Rude-Pac avenged the previous day’s loss in a close 4-2 contest. It was a battle that came down to the final out.
Looking Ahead: Santa Barbara I
July 10, 2008
FDC is heading to Santa Barbara to again compete in the A-Major division on July12-13, 2008. They will face a tough schedule that includes the two top ranked teams of the A-Major division Long Beach Blacksox and Rude-Pac.
The fires in neighboring Goleta, CA have cast some doubt on the tournament. The SCIFL hopes the air quality holds to allow for another successful fast-pitch softball weekend.

2008 NAFA – Santa Fe Springs I (SCIFL V):
Over the Hump
May 15, 2008
The SCIFL is at the midpoint of the season and back in action on May 17-18, 2008 in Santa Fe Springs, CA. Flor de Caña (FDC) Softball (13W – 9L: 30 pts) is currently in 4th place behind Panteras II (37 pts), So. Cal Hustlers (37 pts), and Palm Springs Express (31 pts). FDC can take confidence from the fact that it is within striking distance of the leading teams despite the fact that FDC has yet to play great ball.
Having crossed the hump, FDC enters into the meaningful portion of the season. Every team knows this is where it starts to matter. By now, players have figured out their roles and teams are making the push towards achieving something greater. You’d better be surging at the end of the year if you expect to make an impact at the National Tournaments.
Saturday, May 17, 2008 Schedule:
9:00 am FDC vs. Burn Outs Diamond 1
10:45 am FDC vs. Panteras II Diamond 2
4:00 pm FDC vs. So. Cal Hustlers Diamond 1

2008 ASA – Palm Springs II (SCIFL IV):
Silent Encore
April 28, 2008
Flor de Caña (FDC) Softball finished 2nd in Palm Springs II over the April 26-27, 2008 weekend in Palm Springs, CA. The city was ripe with excitement as the Coachella Music Festival brought thousands of visitors to the Palm Springs area over the weekend. Hotel rooms were hard to come by and in some cases even harder to pay for. Some of the “cheapest” hotel rooms in the area were going for $300/night.
FDC gave only a middle of the road performance on Saturday, but came back strong on Sunday morning. The team opened the day with a decisive 12-0 victory over Amigos II. Darrin McCall earned the shut-out victory and was absolutely lights out. He set the tone of the game early by hitting spots and mixing in a nice assortment of pitches.
The next game of the day started out looking bleak. Panteras II jumped all over FDC with 5 runs in the 1st inning. After giving Panteras II a large lead, the FDC offense had its work cut out. FDC responded by tacking on 4 runs in their half of the 1st. FDC eventually tied the game and went ahead for good when Mario Ramirez hit a 3-run HR. The Ramirez bomb was the highlight of the day and capped off an 8-5 win for FDC. Also noteworthy, Cecilio Smalling entered the game with 2 outs in the 1st inning and pitched a great game to keep the Panteras II in check.
Unfortunately, the comeback sapped the FDC tank as they mustered up a lackluster effort against a strong Hustlers team in the final game. The Hustlers blanked FDC by a score of 10-0. Needless to say, the Championship Game didn’t live up to the billing. While FDC was less than satisfied with their final performance, the team proved over the weekend that it can come back from a deep deficit against any team.

2008 ASA – Palm Springs (SCIFL IV):
Bring the Noise
April 25, 2008
The sunny city of Palm Springs, CA will host two major events over the weekend of April 26-27, 2008. Mainstream America is more familiar with the Coachella Music Festival which headlines the likes of Prince, Jack Johnson, Dwight Yoakam, and Fat Boy Slim to name a few. For Southern California’s avid fast-pitch softball community all the noise will be at Demuth Park.
Flor de Caña (FDC) Softball looks to get back on track in Palm Springs. Coming off of a disappointing trip to Las Vegas, FDC is anxious to take the field again. The current FDC squad is the best hitting team ever fielded by FDC. The team’s batting average stands at an astounding .394, 19 points better than the 2007 squad’s .375. Offense has been the team’s core strength.
FDC looks to establish the same prowess on the defensive side of the ball. The athletes are in place. Now it’s a matter of getting quality innings from the pitchers and getting improved focus from the defense. When FDC puts all together, the team has proven it is something special and vice versa. Focus will determine which team shows up.

2008 NAFA – Las Vegas I
Vegas wasn’t built by winners!
April 07, 2008
Money wasn’t the only thing lost in Las Vegas, NV over the weekend of April 5-6, 2008. Flor de Caña (FDC) Softball made an uncharacteristic early exit from the tournament and seemingly found every pot-hole and obstacle in Nevada.
FDC pulled perhaps the toughest draw of the tournament with an 8:00 a.m. game against Panteras II (PII). These same teams squared off for the Championship game of the previous tournament. Foreboding signs promised a long day for FDC. Few would have guessed how long.
FDC managed to come out ahead of PII beating Joe Edwards for the 2nd time in as many contests. It was all down hill after that. FDC suffered consecutive losses to the Southern Cal Hustlers, Arizona Brewers, Fat City, and PII in the final elimination game. FDC finished the tournament (1-4) in disappointing style. The weekend proved that an unfocused team can go from top to bottom at the blink of an eye.
The tournament weekend was mired with controversy and general chaos. The timing and scheduling of the games/brackets made little sense with some teams playing consecutively at 8:00 & 9:45 a.m., while others did not start until 11:30 a.m. Fields had no chalk lines and umpires were forced to make judgment calls based on imaginary lines. Both occurrences are inexcusable for tournaments of this caliber.
Conditions made a difficult day for umpires, but there was absolutely no justification for the lack of professionalism exhibited by one umpire. In FDC’s Game 4 against Fat City, a noticeably flustered field umpire elected to take the game into his own hands and severely handicap FDC. In an unprecedented move, the field umpire (with his back to the play as he followed a deep fly ball to CF) trumped the home plate umpire and made a call regarding the position of runners. The “out” call took FDC out of an inning and took a run off the scoreboard. FDC Manager Cecilio Smalling attempted to get an explanation of the call.
Lacking a reasonable explanation, the field umpire threw out FDC’s best hitter #22 – Mike Thomas after misinterpreting a word the player said as he was walking to his position. The same umpire, whose experience primarily consists of Girls’ Youth Softball, later threw out #19 – David Carrillo for telling him he was “terrible”. Leading up to the player ejections, not a single person raised his voice or cursed at the arbiter. The inability of one umpire to maintain a neutral outlook on the game cost FDC its #3 and #4 hitters. As if the preceding events were not sufficiently ridiculous, the umpire went on to challenge Mike Thomas to a fight and gestured for a confrontation.
The umpire position is a challenging one, especially as competitive players question many of the calls. Players are thankful when they get an umpire who treats them with respect, is knowledgeable of the rules, and communicates effectively. This was perhaps the worst example of an umpire lacking the self-restraint, neutrality, and maturity to warrant employment. The FDC team paid for this individual’s indiscretion and saw an early exit to the tournament.
FDC is anxious to get Vegas behind them and continue on with their successful 2008 season. Log on soon for more FDC news!!!

2008 NAFA – Las Vegas (SCIFL III):
Vegas, Baby, Vegas!!!
April 03, 2008
The Southern California Independent Fastpitch League (SCIFL) will trek to the city of Lost Money for the 3rd event of the 2008 season. Vegas will be the largest tournament of the season thus far with 19 teams participating in what has been dubbed a “Super Qualifier”. Tournament winners will have their entry fee paid for the 2008 NAFA World Series.
Flor de Caña (FDC) Softball (8W – 2L) will stick to the simple game plan of attacking opponents early. Matt Bando’s battle cry can still be heard echoing in the Palm Springs dessert:
“Strike First! Strike Hard! No Mercy, Sir!”
- FDC’s Matt Bando (borrowed from Karate Kid - 1984)
Bando and his successful mantra, on loan from the Cobra Kai dojo, are now focused on Las Vegas. FDC will do what it does best: attack the ball and let the rest work itself out.
Las Vegas also marks the return of table-setter and strong arm #2 – Darrin McCall to the FDC line-up. McCall was absent from Palm Springs (SCIFL II) attending to more important matters as he and his wife, Kathy, welcomed their beautiful baby girl (Antonia Theresa McCall) to the world. Mom and baby are doing great and promise to join us at the field soon.
The tournament will be held in the standard NAFA 3-game guarantee bracket with the game schedule being determined by team’s performance. In a rematch of the Palm Springs championship game, FDC will open the tournament against Panteras II.
Saturday, April 05, 2008:
8:00 am FDC vs. Panteras II Field 1

2008 NAFA – Palm Springs I
The early bird done it!
March 16, 2008
Flor de Caña (FDC) Softball lived up to the weekend mantra of getting the bats going early. FDC added a little something to the phrase by maintaining a torrid pace throughout the weekend en route to a perfect (6-0) championship victory in Palm Springs. The victory marked FDC’s 1st tournament championship of the young 2008 season and earned FDC some much needed points in the standings.
When a team explodes for 62 runs over 6 games, there is no single offensive player that stands out. This was the case in Palm Springs, CA on March 15-16, 2008 as each player contributed significantly to the offense. The best compliment to the FDC line-up was given by an opposing manager who said, “Pick your poison. Who the hell are you going to pitch to on Flor de Caña?”
The story on defense was just as impressive as FDC allowed only 9 runs over 3 games on Saturday with hurlers Carlos Gonzalez, Mike Encinas, and Cecilio Smalling, Sr. each earning wins. The staff veteran Smalling, Sr. showed his stripes as he shouldered all of the pitching duties on Sunday.
Below is a recap of the Championship game against a talented Panteras II squad on Sunday, March 16, 2008:
A-Division Championship Game: Flor de Caña (10) – Panteras II (6)
The A-Division Palm Springs Championship Game saw the collision of 2 undefeated teams. Both Panteras II (PII) and Flor de Caña (FDC) played extremely well the entire weekend so it was no surprise when the final game highlighted these 2 powerful squads. It would ultimately come down to the pitcher that could best withstand the other’s offense. In the end, FDC’s Cecilio Smalling, Sr. held on long enough to best PII’s Joe Edwards.
PII struck hard in the top of the 2nd inning with 3 runs. Brian Sepulveda singled and was followed by a Dustin Edwards walk. Gabriel Toledo advanced both runners into scoring position with a sac bunt. Roy Saucedo cashed in the runs with a 2-RBI single. Saucedo himself later scored on a hard hit ball by Jason Obregon.
For years, Cecilio Smalling, Sr. has been the heart of the FDC squad and is his toughest when the team needs him most. After a hard 2nd inning, FDC’s veteran leader Cecilio Smalling, Sr. came out in usual form and blanked PII in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th innings. Having earned tiring wins in the team’s previous 3 contests, Smalling, Sr. had to dig deep to hold down PII’s strong lineup. Meanwhile, FDC’s offense, trailing by 3 runs, would still have to find a way to respond.
A tough PII defense and crafty pitching by Joe Edwards kept FDC at bay until the FDC offense came alive with 2 outs in the 3rd inning. Lou Enriquez came to the plate with 2-outs and Matt Bando on 2nd base. Enriquez started the FDC momentum swing when he hit a towering double to left field. Enriquez then scored on another double off the bat of David Carrillo. Mike Thomas was hit by a pitch and Albert Garcia singled to plate another run. The hit parade continued when Mario Ramirez hit a single to score Mike Thomas. Cecilio Smalling, Jr. capped off the scoring when his single plated Garcia. FDC strung together 6 hits to score 5 runs and take their first lead in the contest.
Lou Enriquez was back igniting the offense in the bottom of the 4th inning. He hit another deep 2-out double and promptly scored on a Carrillo single putting FDC ahead of PII 6-3.
The 5th was more FDC. Albert Garcia reached on a beautiful bunt single and Mario Ramirez hit a shot to right-center scoring Garcia and earning himself a triple. Ramirez scored on a wild pitch to the next batter. Later in the inning, Tom Dudley walked and would eventually make his way around the bases to score on a PII error. FDC led 9-3.
FDC added a final run in the bottom of the 6th inning. PII showed that its lineup has no quit as they plated 3 runs in the top of 7th. FDC ended the game 10-6 winning their first SCIFL Championship of the 2008 season.
FDC Softball returns to action in Las Vegas, NV on April 5-6, 2008. Log on soon for more FDC news!!!

2008 ASA – Palm Springs (SCIFL II):
The early bird gets some!
March 14, 2008
Beautiful Palm Springs will host the 2nd event of the Southern California Independent Fastpitch League (SCIFL) 2008 season. Flor de Caña (FDC) Softball (2W – 2L) looks to rebound from a sluggish finish in Norwalk, CA.
The FDC game plan for Palm Springs is simple:
“Strike First! Strike Hard! No Mercy, Sir!”
- FDC’s Matt Bando (borrowed from Karate Kid - 1984)
FDC’s offense has hit a combined .390 and plated 29 runs in 4 games. That type of fire power gives a team confidence that it can fight back from any deficit. Therein lies the problem thus far. The FDC defense has struggled early and the offense has had to play “catch-up” in every contest. Of the 24 runs allowed in 2008, 13 have come in the 1st inning. Holding down opponents early will give FDC a chance to jump out and stay ahead of the competition.
In other news, FDC will most likely be without the strong arm of #2 – Darrin McCall for the Palm Springs Tournament as he and his wife await the arrival of FDC’s newest addition. The FDC family sends thoughts and prayers in their direction.
Saturday, March 15, 2008 Schedule:
12:30 pm FDC vs. Amigos II Diamond 6
4:00 pm FDC vs. Cali Soldiers Diamond 7
5:45 pm FDC vs. Young Bucks Diamond 8
Field Address:
De Muth Park
4375 Mesquite Ave
Palm Springs, CA 92264
FDC 3 Pick – Players to Watch Out For: Palm Springs
Described this week by (C) #11 – Mario Ramirez
#13 – Carlos Gonzalez: “He’s got to come through now…He’s been slacking.”
#22 – Mike Thomas: “Spanky’s gotten more comfortable with the team.”
#19 – David Carrillo: “He’s finally going to start hitting the ball hard.”

2008 Team Party/Beer Pong Tournament
Flor de Caña (FDC) Softball celebrated the opening of the
2008 season in grand style. FDC team members, family,
and friends met at the Ferguson household in Garden
Grove, CA for a fun night of Beer Pong and camaraderie. The team gives special thanks to Outfielder #3 – Mike
Ferguson and his wife Ressi for inviting the FDC family into
their home for this wonderful event.
The Beer Pong Tourney was a party highlight and proved there’s nothing like home field advantage as Mike and Ressi Ferguson’s teams made it to the final table. The Championship Game found Thunder N’ Lightning (David Carrillo & Mike Ferguson) facing off against Pretty Women (Ressi Ferguson & Crystal Cripple).
Thunder N’ Lightning mounted a strong attack in the semi-final round against Laurel & Hardy (Mario Ramirez and Cecil Smalling, Jr.) to reach the Championship. Laurel & Hardy proved tough competition in their first ever Beer Pong Tourney. Pretty Women entered the Championship following a huge come from behind victory of Tubbs & Crockett (Eric Smalling & Matt Bando). Trailing 7 cups to 1, Pretty Women had ice running through their veins as they settled in and drained all 7 cups en route to the Championship Table. The Cinderella Story was not to be as the well-rested Thunder N’ Lightning knocked Pretty Women out with 5 remaining cups. In the end, Mike Ferguson and David Carrillo were crowned 2008 Beer Pong Champions.
2008 Beer Pong Champions: Thunder N’ Lightning
The festivities also included FDC players and family showing their versatility. FDC Catcher turned Master Chef #11 – Mario Ramirez manned the grill and kept double cheeseburgers pumping out all night long. Meanwhile, Mario’s wife Carla Ramirez handled cashier duties and ran Quality Control on the chef’s output. Host and MC duties were covered by Ace Pitcher #17 – Cecilio Smalling. Cecilio also came through on a promise to share our sponsor’s product as he assumed the role of cocktail waitress and handed out some mean Flor de Caña Rum & Cokes.
The night concluded with an Awards Ceremony to honor the 2007 achievements. Award recipients were voted by the 2007 team at the conclusion of last season.
2007 Flor de Caña (FDC) Softball Award Winners:
Most Improved: #27 – Eric Smalling
Gold Glove: #19 - David Carrillo
Silver Slugger: #27 - Eric Smalling
Leadership/Achievment Award: #42 - Orville Draughan
Most Valuable Player (MVP): #19 - David Carrillo
The most meaningful award of the night went to the “Grey Eagle” Orville Draughan. For the second year, FDC Softball presented a Leadership/Achievement Award. Again, a truly valuable and deserving recipient was chosen. The award was presented by the 2006 recipient Cecilio Smalling, Sr. and reads:
Flor de Caña Achievement Award
#42
Orville Draughan
Your Leadership, Support, and Commitment
Are an Inspiration To Our Team
Orville Draughan has given selflessly to FDC Softball for several years. His contributions come in the form of mentoring younger FDC players and frustrating opposing hitters with his variable speed change-ups (slow, slower, & slowest). The award is a small token of appreciation for all Orville brings to FDC Softball.
FDC Softball thanks all participants in this fun evening and we hope to do it again next year. See you at the field in 2008.
